Interactive Multimedia Story

Inanimate Alice  adds sound, image and interactivity to text to tell the story of Alice and her imaginary friend Brad.  This site provides an example of how new digital technologies can change our interaction with text.

This is something new, it feels a bit strange, experience the story of Inanimate Alice and see what you think.

Keep track of websites

There are a few problems with adding a website to your Favorites list in Microsoft Explorer.  Firstly, the list does not allow users to add notes explaining the nature of the site being saved.  How often have you looked at a bulging Favorites list and wondered what some of the entries represented?  For those who are saving sites that support their studies, the Favorites list can become top heavy and unmanageable when the huge number of sites required for research across a number of topics are listed.  In addition, the list of Favorites is only available on the computer on which it was created, frustrating for any student who might be using a number of computers in seperate home and study locations.

The answer is to use the http://del.icio.us.com site.  Click on Get Started to register, install the del.icio.us buttons on your toolbar and you are ready for single click bookmarking.

del.icio.us allows users to attach notes to their saved sites and to mark them with tags that identify content.  The sites can be bundled (grouped) for further ease of use.  To take a look at how del.icio.us can be used to mark, note and group sites, click on the web catalogue link in the list of References on the right.

PLUSS

The start of the school year brings with it the start of research assignments across the curriculum.  To assist with this, the library site has a new page describing the research process.  If you have ever found yourself wondering how to start a research assignment, plagued by writer’s block, or vague about what to do, the information on the PLUSS page may help to provide structure and understanding of how to tackle the task effectively.  Click on the PLUSS tab at the top of this page to view the information.  Please leave a comment if you find that PLUSS has helped you with an assignment.

Australian Film and Television Archive

The Reference list now contains a link to an Australian film and television archive called australianscreen.  This archive has been developed by the Australian Film Commission and provides access to excerpts from film, television, home movies and advertisements including footage of Dame Nellie Melba, Melbourne Cup 1896, Amy Johnson’s historic landing in Brisbane in 1930 and soldiers parading in Sydney before leaving for Word War 1 in 1917.  Footage available on this site provides fascinating glimpses of Australian life from the turn of the twentieth century through to present day.

From over 1700 clips, 600 have been chosen for their educational value and are presented with teachers notes developed by Curriculum Corporation through The Le@rning Federation.

Other new titles include “Destroying Avalon” by Kate McCaffrey http://katemccaffrey.wordpress.com/ and the new Alexander McCall Smith (The No. 1 Ladie’s Detective Agency) novels In the Company of Cheerful Ladies and Blue Shoes of Happiness.  Ask Mrs Stephenson about these, she has read them all.
